Favourable Mediation Outcome in Unfair Dismissal Involving Former Lecturer

Our Dispute Resolution practice group, led by Hoong Min Cheah successfully represented our client, UNIKOP in defending an unfair dismissal claim filed by a former lecturer before the Industrial Court. The claimant alleged procedural impropriety in the disciplinary process, breach of natural justice and wrongful suspension pending investigation.

We were engaged to draft a comprehensive response to the Statement of Case and to present a meticulous account of the employer’s internal investigation findings and domestic inquiry proceedings. During mediation, we strategically negotiated a favourable settlement for our client, resulting in a modest ex-gratia payment without any admission of liability. The terms included a full and final closure of all employment-related claims.

This outcome spared our client the risk of prolonged litigation and potential reputational or financial exposure. The matter demonstrates the Firm’s capability in managing sensitive employee disputes, safeguarding employer prerogative and securing practical resolutions aligned with business objectives.
